MONTEREY POP: 50th Anniversary Celebration

This June marks the 50th anniversary of the Monterey International Pop Festival

On June 16th, 17th and 18th, exactly 50 years to the day, Phil Lesh, who performed there as a member of the Grateful Dead, will return to the Monterey County Fairgrounds in Northern California to join a lineup of musicians who weren't even born in 1967. The talent list for this replay of the festival includes Jack Johnson, Norah Jones, Jim James, Kurt Vile, Father John Misty, Gary Clark Junior, The Head and the Heart and Langhorne Slim. The complete lineup will be announced tomorrow (Monday).

In addition to the Dead, the original Monterey Pop festival -- which was documented in a classic rock film -- presented historic performances by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Otis Redding, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Jefferson Airplane, The Who, Ravi Shankar, Simon & Garfunkel, Eric Burdon and The Animals, Country Joe and the Fish, Buffalo Springfield (with David Crosby), The Byrds (without David Crosby), The Mamas & The Papas and many others.
