MONTEREY POP: 50 Years Ago This Weekend

Music history was made 50 years ago this weekend, when rock's first festival, Monterey Pop, took place in Northern California.

The opening night including such chart-busters as Simon and Garfunkel, Johnny Rivers, The Association and Eric Burdon and the Animals. But over its three days, it featured such new names as The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company, The Steve Miller Band, Jefferson Airplane and Buffalo Springfield. The Mamas and the Papas, whose John Phillips was one of the concert's main organizers, closed the festival.

Adding to its impact was D.A. Pennebaker's acclaimed documentary Monterey Pop, which not only preserved the performances, but gave fans everywhere the chance to share a history-changing event
