Marathon Hockey Game Goes 11 Days

Some hockey players in Buffalo, New York broke an incredible world record on Monday while raising more than a million dollars for a cancer charity.

Two teams played the world's longest continuous hockey game ever, skating and shooting for 11 straight days. The opening faceoff took place on June 22nd at 9 p.m. and finally ended at 8 a.m. Monday. The previous record was set in 2015 by two teams in Canada.

Although it never really mattered which team won the game, the score was 1492 - 1477. However, the most important final tally was the $1.2 million raised for the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo.

40 players took part in the game, and they all took turns getting some sleep throughout the 11-day marathon. The only other breaks they got were during intermissions when the ice was cleaned.

The game's organizer, Mike Lesakowski, says he got the idea after his wife passed away from cancer at age 35. He says, "Seeing what my wife went through was difficult. You just rely on those people that help you get through things and it makes you a stronger person because of it." (Buffalo News)
