DOORS: Densmore Remembers Whisky Owner

Mario Maglieri once famously banned The Doors from his Sunset Strip nightclub the Whisky a Go Go after a drunken Jim Morrison performed the Oedipal portion of “The End” for the first time.

Despite that, drummer John Densmore has fond memories of Maglieri, who died Thursday at age 93. He writes in Billboard, "He was probably the warmest doorman/bouncer there ever was unless you were on his bad side. I saw him deck several deserving patrons." But Densmore adds, "He LOVED musicians. Jim would come in, get drunk, jump on stage and ruin the set of whoever was playing and Mario still loved Jim. The Doors loved Mario. It was impossible not to."

  • The Doors were the house band at the Whisky for a number of months up to their banning from the club in August 1966.
