ROCK HALL: Looking Ahead to 2018

Radiohead and Rage Against the Machine are becoming eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the first time. With the requirement of 25 years since an artist's first album, they are just the most intriguing candidates who could make the ballot.

Other notable names whose first releases came in 1993:

  • Hootie and the Blowfish
  • Stone Temple Pilots
  • Wu-Tang Clan

While attention is always paid to the new names on the ballot, several veteran acts having been raising their profiles lately:

  • Last year's nominations of Steppenwolf and MC5 were well-received, although they fell short.
  • The Zombies, who were nominated in two of the last three years, have a new exhibit at the Hall's museum in Cleveland.
  • Janet Jackson was on the comeback trial when she stopped to have a baby and end a marriage.
  • Women are badly under-represented. Maybe 2018 could be the year for Eurythmics? Annie Lennoxwas just announced as the recipient of the first-ever George Harrison Global Citizen Award.

Nominees will be announced in October and winners revealed in December. Next year's gala will be held in Cleveland on April 14th. (Cleveland.com)

  • Besides the 10 biggest snubs we recently talked about, Bad Company and The Doobie Brothers also have long legacies and remain big concert attractions.
  • Peter Frampton falls in that category as well. We've forgiven him for the Sgt. Pepper's movie.
