Tom Petty's final interview has been posted online.
He spoke with the Los Angeles Times on September 27th for an article about the end of the band's 40th anniversary tour and what was coming next. The hour-long talk with writer Randy Lewis covered many topics:
- Petty thought the reception for the tour was the best they'd ever gotten. "This has been that big slap on the back we never got."
- He was looking forward to producing a second album by The Shelters.
- He admitted that he needed to learn how to take it easy. "I just have to learn to rest a little bit, like everyone’s telling me. I need to stop working for a period of time... It’s hard for me... If I don’t have a project going, I don’t feel like I’m connected to anything. I don’t even think it’s that healthy for me. I like to get out of bed and have a purpose."
- Petty even spoke about what would happen to the Heartbreakers if one of them couldn't continue. "If one of us went down, or if one of us died -- God forbid -- or got sick... We’re all older now. Then we’d stop. I think that would be the end of it, if someone couldn’t do it."
