DONALD FAGEN: Flying the Nightfly Again

Fagan album

Donald Fagen's first solo album, 1982’s The Nightfly, is being reissued on vinyl in a limited-edition box set today (Friday).

It's one of the first all-digital albums, and Fagen says it's a favorite among audio engineers.

The Nightfly was also one of the first albums released on CD in 1984. But ironically, the CD version was manufactured from third- and fourth-generation masters, and it was Stevie Wonder who tipped off the Fagen camp. He called Roger Nichols, the album's engineer, and told him his CD copy of the album sounded "funny." The problem has since been rectified, and this vinyl reissue is made from the original master recording.

Fagen starts the first Steely Dan tour without Walter Becker -- who passed away last month -- tonight (Friday) in Thackerville, Oklahoma.

  • If you're going to bother with vinyl, spend the money for the good stuff. Lightweight records scratch easily and don't last long if you play them frequently.
