Vampires Walking Ventura Blvd Today for Tom

At last tally: More than 500 people plan to dress in black and attend the “Tom Petty Memorial Vampire Walk” on Thursday, Oct. 19.

The kid-friendly walk is a tribute to the late Heartbreakers’ frontman and his music.

Mary Soracco, the Sunland/Tujunga-based designer/owner behind The Contrary Dame specializing in handmade goth-style jewelry, first organized the event as a bit of a lark. She always got a chuckle out of the “Free Fallin'” lyric about “all the vampires, walkin’ through the Valley.” But in the days and weeks since posting her idea on social media, the walk has taken on new meaning.
