A proposed bill to reduce penalty for having weed

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WPMI) — A new bill coming into consideration in Alabama could give young adults a break.

A Republican lawmaker proposed a bill intending to keep young people from being slapped with serious criminal records for personal use of marijuana.

Our current law says if caught with marijuana the first time its a class a misdemeanor and you could get up to a year in jail and pay up to a $6,000 fine.

Under this new proposal if caught the first three times they will be violations with a difference of fines one would have to pay.

One goal of the proposal is to prevent college kids from having felonies attached to their names.

That bill goes to vote tomorrow.
