DYLAN, THE BAND: Early Electric Guitar Up for Auction

Dylan

A guitar played by Bob Dylan on his early electric tours is expected to fetch between $400,000 and $600,000 at auction.

The 1965 Fender Telecaster was actually shared by Dylan and Robbie Robertson of The Band (or The Hawks, as they were known when they first backed him). Robertson played it on many classic Band songs, while Dylan used it on Blonde on Blonde and The Basement Tapes. They both played it at The Band's Last Waltz concert.

Robertson stripped off the black finish, leaving it wood-grain, in 1970. He says the instrument "has been on the front lines of so many phenomenal events, I gaze at it with amazement."

It's part of Julien's Auctions' Music Icons live and online auction, which will take place May 19th at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City. It will be on display there from May 14th through 18th. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the American Indian College Fund.
