GRATEFUL DEAD: By the Book

G Dead

Longtime San Francisco Chronicle rock scribe Joel Selvin and author Pamela Turley have co-written a book about the post-Jerry Garcia activities of The Grateful Dead -- namely, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann.

Fare Thee Well begins with Garcia's death in 1995 and ends two decades later, with the band's 50th anniversary concerts that give the book its title. Selvin calls it "a study in grief," and tells Rolling Stone that "these four men tumbled through life and tried to redefine themselves and their relationships to one another while coming to terms with having been part of the Grateful Dead."

Selvin says he pitched the book in 2006, but found it needed a happy ending to attract a publisher. The 2015 Fare Thee Well shows provided it.

The book will be out June 19th.
