Thursday Christie's auctionof more than 120 of David Gilmour's guitars brought in $21.5 million, much more than was expected.
The black Fender Stratocaster he played on numerous Pink Floyd recordings was the day's star, selling for $3,975,000. That blew right past the estimate of $100,000 to $150,000 and broke the record for the priciest guitar sold at auction. That record was previously held by a $2.7-million white Strat signed for charity by Gilmour, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, members of The Stones, Queen,Who and many others.
