TOM PETTY: MusiCares Person of the Year

Tom Petty was honored Friday night in Los Angeles as the 2017 MusiCares Person of the Year.

With Matt Damon, Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh and Lars Ulrich of Metallica among the notables in the house -- and with House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy and House Democratic Leader Nanci Pelosi seated at the same table -- more than a dozen artists payed homage to Petty. The performances ranged from all-out rocking assaults by Foo Fighters, Gary Clark Junior and Cage the Elephant to the softer stylings of Randy Newman, Norah Jones, Don Henley and Lucinda Williams.

Following Petty's emotional 12-minute acceptance speech, in which he talked about cynicism, fame, his past and and rock and roll's future, he and The Heartbreakers took the stage for their own set. They brought out The Bangles, Jeff Lynne and Dhani Harrison and Stevie Nicks, who not only dueted with Petty on "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" but also sang the less-known "Insider," which Petty said he wrote for her.

Recording Academy head Neil Portnow announced that the event had raised a record-breaking $8.5 million dollars for MusiCares, which provides financial, medical and personal assistance to musicians in need.
